I have a 03 yukon with loose steering. I read about the steering wheel position sensors. How do they work? My power steering pump does not have a EVO on it. What is the purpose of the wheel sensor?

does it it loose it in both directions or just one. I have seen alot of steering gears fail in those types of vehicles.
