I hear a "clunk" sound when I press the gas and engage the car forward. It is louder (or appears so) when I move forward from a stand still versus coasting and then apply pressure to the drive train via the gas pedal. I don't think it is the actual transmission, as it sounds more to me like the drive shaft or rear differential. What or where should I check? Ideas? Much appreciated.

have your driveshaft checked for u'joints. if you are going to do this yourself look for rust arund the seals of the caps. and then if you pull it off make sure they are free with no binding. It could also be play in the rear end that you are hearing as well. Especially with teh mileage of your truck.
