The Yukon made a high pitched noise and then died and then after restarting the power steering was gone. The battery light continues to flash as well now. How do I know if it is just the belt and if it is, is that something that can be easily changed by someone with no car repair experience? What tools would be needed to accomplish this repair?

Check and see if you still have the serpentine belt on the pulleys! If not check the tensioner and idlers to see if they spin without binding, also the A/C pulley.
