1995 GMC Truck backfiring

when i accellorate i loose rpms, when i let off rmps go up...never going up past 2000rpms, it is backfiring. as i accelorate the check engine light comes on (as the truck is dying) then i let off the gas and check engine light turns off. what can i do i feel like i've tried all the obvious!

You have a problem within the engine management system -you need to have the computer scanned for code/s this is your starting point of diagnosis. Autozone provides this service free.
