The transmission first shifted with difficulty from 1st to 2nd. Now the transmission will not work at all.

Is it possible that a modulator valve is bad or does the transmission need to be replaced

If it does not manualy shift then it's bad news bears.
Assume you checked fluid and filter has been changed a few times in 210K miles.
