The noise comes and goes, if I put car in park it doesn't make noise when I press on the gas, when its in gear it makes the noise? Is there any way to really clean out the lifters? And if not how hard is it to change out the cam and lifters, do I need to remove the engine or can I do it in engine compartment? Is this a long hard job? A mechanic wants 1000 to do the work? Thank you!

$1000 is a bout right, first thing you need to do is try to isolate the sound. Some of those the torque converter bolts would come loose and hit t eback of the block making a noise simila toa lifter. That is easy to check and if it is then put loctite on the bolts and tighten them up. Especially if you say it makes the noise when in gear. A lifter will make noise all the time not only in gear. Then check to see if you have a bad cam. Pull both valve covers off and see if one valve isn't movingdown as deep as the others. If it is doing that just replace the cam and lifters or have your local mechanic do it. It is quite involved
