2001 GMC Sonoma 4x4 not engaging

when I push the button for 4 whell, the light comes on and it clics but it does not engage the 4 wheeel what is wrong?

They have a common problem with transfer case shift actuators. But the vehicle needs to be properly inspected before part is just replaced. Any codes stored?
