1997 GMC Sonoma starting

The clutch pedal must be depressed in order to start the engine. It requires a great deal of pressure on the pedal to activate the switch for ignition to occur. Is this something I can repair myself or do I need to take it to a mechanic? I practically have to stand on the pedal for it to catch.

do you have a hydraulic clutch or mechanical?

when did this first occur. have you had any recent work or after market parts done to it?
