I have a 1997 GMC sierra with 194,000 miles on it how do you know if the O2 sensors are going bad

The fuel filter is located on the drivers side on the bottom of the fuel cell behind a plastic cover

The vehicle will not run correctly with a bad O2 sensor (usually black smoke, poor mileage).
The engine light should also come on.
