A repair shop is replacing the valve cover gaskets on my truck and think it is necessary to replace the "valley" gasket also. Is there such a thing and is it likely this gasket needs replacing?

Yes there is one. It is under the intake. It could be leaking too. The only way to be sure is to clean everything, drive, and recheck it.
