Our 2000 GMC Sierra 1500 makes clunking noises when shifting to DRIVE, from D to R, and also makes these sounds when pulling out from a stop. The transmission hasn't had any other problems than that yet, but I'm worried that it will get worse all of a sudden. What kind of work would need to be done at this point to prevent the transmission from needing to be totally overhauled?

Sounds like U-joint problem. Have them checked and relaced if found defective.
