1998 GMC Sierra shift out of park

the transmission is not wanting to come out of park. sometimes i work with it and it shifts out and goes through all gears smooth, then may hang up in park.its like trying to shift out without holding the brakes

Test the brake switch if okay-have the shift interlock system checked out could be the shift lock control solenoid causing it.
