The transmission on my GMC pick up has an intermittent whine. I asked a mechanic about changing the fluid, and he told me that if it had not been changed in the last 40K miles that it would most likely destroy the transmission. Can I get someone to confirm this for me? I mean a testimonial or first-hand knowledge.

Now, I do know that a bad catalytic converter can result in the same symptoms. Can anyone advise me as to a secure course of action?

I cant confirm it but I will deny it. You must change the fluid and filter, right now! The only thing that will cause this transmission to whine is a clogged transmission oil filter. I have seen it many times. Also check to make sure the pan is not pushed in from hitting something. Definitely change oil and filter with a new pan gasket.
