Hi all, I have a 94’ GMC safari (astro van) and for some time now I have been experiencing starting trouble. The van would start fine in the A.M but as the day wore on the starting problem worsened, I would turn the engine over but it would NOT catch… I would have to wait 5-10 minutes before I would try again, and then it would hard start, I have fuel, spark and a clean air system but no go. So I decided to give it a “tune up” plugs, cap, rotor, fuel filter and so on. I have properly replaced all components and now the van just turns over with no start……. Any ideas… please

What to check next

Diagnostic guidance. Suggested checks and possible repairs are separate from the owner's reported results.

Recheck the recently installed ignition components and wire routing against the correct service information. Have spark and fuel pressure tested during the no-start before replacing another component.

Did you clean the rotor shaft before putting in the new rotor. Use fine sandpaper to remove any rust and vacuum debris out. Pick up coil in distributor may be shot. Was there a lot of rust under the cap? I suggest you find a cheap repair manual like the chiltons or haynes. Helps making diagnosis so much easier.

With all of the work you have done I would check each plug for proper gap and it is properly seated in the block. I would also make sure that the wires are going to the proper place on the distributor cap (wrong fire order will cause a crank but no start). Double check your work on the cap and rotor for the same reason. Lastly check to make sure your fuel pressure is accurate.

I would think that the problem will be related to the "spark" and "timing".

the initial problem could be starter related i would ceck that. for the no start check to see if the rotor can be put on in different positions. if yes you may have installed it backwards. if not check for fuel pressure, and carrect firing order. im also interested to know about any other parts you put on.

On the previous page there is a post for "1993 astro wont start".
You should check that out and see if your issues may be related. That guy found a solution and posted it. Your problem does sound similar.

Discussion summary

4.3 Hell..

A 1994 GMC Safari 4.3 developed intermittent hot restarting difficulty. After plugs, distributor cap, rotor and fuel filter were replaced, it cranked without starting. Replies suggested ignition checks and fuel-pressure testing.

Reported outcome: No successful restart or confirmed failed part was reported.

The pump and pickup-coil suggestions were not diagnoses. No measured fuel pressure or ignition-test results were supplied.
