Previously had no transmisson problems and all of a sudden it slams into all gears and check engine light is now on. Does anyone know what could possibly cause this?

Go to an auto parts store ( or somewhere ) and get it put on a scanner to see what the codes are .

My 97 safari is slamming into gear from 1st to second whenever the transmission gets hot but the service engine soon light never comes on. It has been doing it for at least 7 years and I have 150000 miles on it now.
I changed filters and fluid so many times that I forgot how often. I just gave up. When it's slamming I shut the engine off and restart then it shifts normal for a while.

The service engine soon light comes on when I get bad gas and goes off again when I fill up with different gas.
