air conditioner compressor will not kick on when turned on if the freon is low will this cause the compressor to not come on if not what can it be?

If you haven't had this looked at yet... Yes, there is a sensor in the system that will keep the compressor from pumping on an low or empty system. Mine did the same thing and I had to have the complete compressor replaced because the system leaked so badly.
