I need to set the timing on my van because someone hade decided to turn the shaft and did not mark the spot. So when it was turned I have no idea where to put the shaft.I tried to start it it wants to starts and then just spins

The engine's no.1 piston should be on the compression stroke/TDC then line it up -see below
