I have a 2001 5.3 silverado and the speedo jumps around after I drive for 30 or so miles. It works fine on short trips. Its like it has to get warm to start acting up. It will jump in 5mph. If I turn the truck off for awhile it will start working normal til I travel for alittle bit. Any ideas would be great!
Thanks

What to check next

Diagnostic guidance. Suggested checks and possible repairs are separate from the owner's reported results.

Have the speed indication checked while the fault is present, and give the technician the warm-up and restart pattern. Ask for testing of the speed-signal path and instrument display before replacing either.

hello: Well I think most of the newer spedos are driven by a stepper motor right in the dash itself. The stepper motor is driven by the Computer which gets its info from a speed sensor. I have no idea where these things are on your truck, but if you have a service manual you will be able to locate them
good luck

Speedo Jumping around?

A 2001 Silverado 5.3L developed an erratic speedometer after about 30 miles of driving. Short trips were unaffected, and switching the truck off for a while temporarily restored normal operation.

Reported outcome: No confirmed cause or repair result was reported.

The reply described a possible sensor, computer and instrument-motor signal path but did not verify this truck's design or identify a failed component.
