PICKUP L4 2.2 Liter FI w/90,000 miles Engine leaks oil. Rear main seal or rear of pan gasket. Not a big problem as oil loss is less than 1 quart between oil changes.
My question is:

(1) can repairs be put off till oil loss becomes more of a problem?

(2) Does engine (or trans)have to be pulled to do this rear main seal or rear pan seal?

Yes you can put the job off as long as you keep oil in it, you will need to pull the transmission to do the rear main seal. Here is a video of the job being done on a similar car which the steps are the same on your car.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

My street rod has a mid seventies 305 chevy V8 engine that is leaking oil out the front of engine. Do I have to remove the timing cover from the front of the engine to replace the oil pan gasket?

Thank you.

:D Hey Jeff, good news, you dont have to pull timing chain cover to change oil pan gasket, but you have to drop oil pan to change timing cover gasket!
You do have a seal in the bottom of timing cover but you can do that with the pan down. Just did thid on my 350, have fun!

Are you 100% sure it is motor oil leaking from that area? Transmission fluid can be leaking there as well. Rule of thumb: Reddish looking fluid is transmission, Blackish is oil. After your daily drive, place a fresh piece of cardboard under the leak area. Whatever is leaking will stain the area fairly soon.
If it is your motor oil leaking, make sure you check and add oil to proper level often. You do not want to create an additional problem because of lack of oil.

It may not necessarily be the rear seal. Also check that your oil pan is not leaking around the edges, especially at the rear of engine. To see 100% you must remove the torque convertor cover.
Good luck, let us know what the outcome is.

I have a 98 Chevy S-10 2.2L with 95K miles, recently my pickup is leaking oil and I've noticed a slight knocking sound in the engine when I accelerate, I know there is a problem but how big is it and what will it cost. Thanks

The oil leak isn't usually a big deal, maybe a seal or gasket, but the knocking is probably a rod, which is bad, might as well rebuild it. My mom had a mustang that had that problem and it through a rod straight through the engine block. Be careful, expensive fix if that's the problem.
