Car overheating

I have a 95 pontiac grand am, that just has currently started to overheat very badly. I put water in it and as soon as I put it in, it starts to leak out very badly. While driving or sitting still long enough the car will heat past the 280 mark, which is in the highest temp. On the gauge, and the windows will fog up on the inside of the car and it will leak on the inside of the car on the passenger and driver side? I have been told that it is my heater core, but other opinions think it is the thermostat, what do you think is the problem and how can I fix it fast?

It seems to me that if it's leaking inside the car- passengers floorboard?-That you are looking at the heater core leaking. I am better on older vehicles but this is something that applys to just about all vehicles, regardless of the year or make. Pretty universal that if you have water on car floorboard it's heater core.
Changing can be a pain as you have to pull housings from under dash to get to core, but be patient and go piece by piece and you can get there, or shell out some bucks and let a shop have the headaches. Good luck
