2000 Other GMC Models V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

What would cause my gear shifter to freeze up in park the truck had done it every now and then but the other day i broke it off so now it gets stuck in park and when the guy that happed me put it in gear pulled on the linkage i last the ability to put it in park and 1st gear can you give me a steering colum diagram thanks
