Why is a resistor needed or not needed on an ignition system?

if you have a points type system and some electronic ignitions if you don't have a resistor to cut the voltage down from 12 down to about 9 it will burn the points right up and damage some of the electronics in the electronic system. Not all electronic systems need resistors though.
