I have a 1998 GMC Jimmy, 4.3L, 250,000 miles. I can't push in the botton on the floor shifter. I even tried to use the white bypass tab and could not get the shifter to move. I have needed an ignition switch replaced on three other occasions and this does not seem to have the same symptoms. Everything else works, I just can't push the botton. I had to unhook the transmission cable and shift using that. Do you think the shifter itself needs to be replaced? Everything else seems to work, brake lights, headlights, everything else but the shifter button.

Take the top of the shifter off (look at front of shifter for screw or bolt, facing away from you) Probably broken spring or the such in there

Thanks I will look at that. By top of the shifter do you mean the plastic console part. I already have that off. I probably should have mentioned that I had been having a problem with this for a little while now, but I used to be able to hit the button with my palm hard and get the button to push in. I will look for the spring. I did have the shifter completly out and don't remember seeing a spring.

I was referring to the "T" handle on the top of the shifter
