I have a problem with my 1996 jimmy. When conditions are icy or even just snow on the ground and I try to make a stop, the brakes seem to act up. The pedal travels further than normal and its like the breaks are not engageing.
Under dry conditions, everything seems to be operating normal. Is this something to do with the ABS system?/ And what can I do about this?

Yes this is probably you abs doing this does the pedal click and vibrate up and down too? If so then it is your abs keeping the brakes from locking up so you do not slide and you will plan you stops when the roads are icy.

Thankyou for replying to my question with a straight-forward answer. I am sure that I will have more questions as I plan to keep this vehicle for a long time. I am glad to see a site where you can get advice. Nothing against mechanics, but most garages charge way too much and it always seems like you have to check up on them to make sure you are not being robbed.
Thanks again,
kevin

As an ASE mechanic now and ASE parts guy I understand. That is what made it so hard to stay in business as many will take advantage now keep in mind just as many are honest ones but after a couple of burns it just don't feel like there are any honest ones left. If you any other questions just ask. Thanks and have a Happy New Year (wow that sounds wierd)
