1996 GMC Jimmy Cant drop the fuel tank

1996 GMC Jimmy Four Wheel Drive Automatic

We need to replace the fuel pump inside the fuel tank, but cant get the tank off. How do we get it down? There is a black shield that needs to come off, but we cant get it off. This should be very simple to do, but so far going on 5 hours and not off. Have replace fuel pumps before, but not on this vehicle.

There are 2 straps that hold the tank in the vehicle.You will also need to remove the filler neck, it is strong enough to hold the tank in even if the straps are removed. Be prepeared, gas weighs 6lbs per gallon, so depending on how much is in it, it will be heavy and akward if the fuel begins sloshing around.Also you need to lower it slowly with ajack, the fuel lines will need to be removed about half way out, they most likely arent long enough to stretch far enough to set the tank on the ground.
