I recently aquired a 1995 GMC Jimmy, and was told up front that it may have a blown head gasket as it begins to blow steam from the tail pipe when it warms up and will overheat if allowed to. How can I be sure it is the head gasket? How can I tell which side? And what might I expect to pay to have it diagnosed and repaired, probably at a GM Dealer? Thank You

Only way to tell for sure is to have it tested at a shop. Diagnostic cost would be around $75 at most major dealers. You can however, put your hand over the exhaust end and completely cover up the exhaust, if this causes the engine to stall out badly then it is a bad gasket. Also check the water and oil , if one is higher or lower than it should be, or is mixed and milky looking than that is another sign of faulty head gasket. Estimate is below for replacing one of your vehicle's head gaskets, including $75 labor charge for the diagnostic fee. .
