My father was driving home from work when it started to sputter and sound as if it didnt want to run. I took it for a test drive the next morning and it ran fine the first couple miles or so then started to run rough. It could tell one of the cylinders wasn't firing. I thought maybe it had something to do with it heating up but the problem occured the next morning when it was cold. Assuming that maybe it just needed a tune up, i bought a cap, wires, and plugs and gave it a oil change. When I took it for another test drive, it ran fine the whole time. I thought it was fixed. Then a few hours later I started it up and after about two minutes of run time it started doin the same thing. I checked for codes and all it does is flash code 12. Sometimes it will run fine and other times it will run rough. But now when I let it idle I can hear a ticking noise coming from the rear of the engine. I cant tell if it is mechanical or not. It almost sounds as if it may be coming from the distributor cap area. Im completely stumped on this one so any information would be great.

the ticking noise your hearing may be that the roter or cap is crooked? take the cap back off and check to see that the roter and cap are straight..hope this helps you..
