A noise coming from the rear left wheel that increases with acceleration and disappears when the brakes are applied. It sounds like stones rolling around but it's not. The noise increases with speed. What could this be?

Sometimes if you have a hubcap or center cap on the wheel, it will produce noise, if you have one remove it and go for a ride. If you don't pull the tire off and look at the brakes, are they worn down?
