2005 GMC C1500 slipping

My transmission started to shift really hard from first to second gear today and the check engine light came on. So i took it to the local advance auto parts to find out what the code was and the computer there said TRANSMISSION COMP. SLIPPING. What does this mean and how do i fix it. I was told to change the oil and filter and possibly the torque converter.

That code usually means an internal part is failing.The hard shift is probably due to increased line pressure from whatever is going on inside the trans
