Gives a kick in morning

I don't know if these 2 things could be linked but first off I noticed my car (which i just bought 3 days ago) seems to take awhile to warm up (more then 10 minutes). When I see the needle finally starting to move i put it in drive and it doesn't shift. Eventually it'll give a big kick and I'm good to go. Shifts fine all other times. Just in the morning there's a problem. During the day at work I sit in my car every 2 hours during break and have it running so when its time to go home it hasn't been sitting for hours like it does over night if that makes a difference. What could be the problem?
