More than likely a sensor is bad. Do you have a check engine light?
Could be a TPS, coolant temp, O2 or MAP/MAF sensor.
The best way to find out is to have the ECM scanned to see what values these sensors are putting out.
You should get it fixed because a rich exhaust will burn the CAT up in short order.

I have a 1996 Geo prizm and it has 115,000 miles on it. About one week ago it stopped running at a stop light. IIt would not start at all. I towed it to a local repair shop. They said that it is two things wrong with the car. One is that the distrubor is bad and the crank shaft relay is bad. They put a new distrubor in it and it cranks but will not start. It has not changed. It has start and ran about five minutes when the motor is cold. Then is stops running and will not start. My question is do you think it could be the crank shaft relay? It has half a tank of gas and the said the fuel filter and fuel pump are working fine.
