1995 Geo Prizm Little to NO heat!!

I have what could BARELY be called "luke" warm heat and the defrost hardly works on a cold day - most of the time only defrosting 1/2 of the wind shield! What could be the possible causes & how do I trouble shoot and fix it? I was thinking heater core?

Start by replacing the thermostat and flush out the heater core
