1995 Geo Prizm Can't change gears

Transmission problem
1995 Geo Prizm 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive 165000 miles

I have a geo prizm with a manual transmission, mileage is 165k. When I start the car I can not change gears, it locks into the gear it's in and I can't change. When the car is off I can go through the gears no problem. When it's running and I try and change gears i get a grinding sound but can not change.

Check the clutch master cylinder and bleed slave, look for any leaks, but if clutch pedal is firm, it could be the clutch needs to be replaced.
