1993 Geo Prizm Cruise control won't work

I noticed that when the check engine light comes on, cruise control will not work. Sometimes it will work but then the light comes on and cruise control shuts off. The cruise control light stays on. Also as a side note, speedometer does not work either, but was helped to diagnose this as a faulty speed sensor which I have yet to repair. Could this be connected? If not, any ideas?

Yes they are connected, the ECM would need to know the speed to set the cruise control. Replace the speed sensor, and check the code in the ECM.
