Is the thermostat under the upper or lower engine raditor hose housing?

The lower hose, under the distributor. Two bolts hold the cover on. Make sure you replace the thermostat with an exact match. The thermostat has a small hole in the thermostat. When installed this hole should be at the 11:00 position.

I would get the replacement thermostat from Toyota, just ask for one from a '91 Corolla.
