I have replaced the alternator several times in this car. Is their a cure for this problem or is this just a bad design problem.

Could be the replacements are bad. The original alternator is a good unit.

Could also be there that one of the rock shields is missing allowing water to get to the alternator, or you have a bad ground wire somewhere, or there is an exhaust leak blowing hot exhaust on the alternator, or the wiring to the alternator is frayed and intermittently grounding, etc. etc.

I have two Prizms, 136,000 and 145,000.... both with the original alternators.
