On a VIN6 1990 Geo Prizm head gasket removal- do the cam shafts need to be removed?

camshafts will be one of the last things removed, but yes they must come out.

Try to find a Haynes manual, they have an excellent procedure for headgasket removal on the 4AFE Toyota engine.

When removing cams, MAKE SURE you keep the lifters and shims in the same cylinder, if you mix them up you will have to re-measure all the valves.
