this car makes a whistling sound but only under acceleration and becomes higher pitched the faster you go and stops when you let off the gas. does anyone have a idea what this might be ?

Take the intake system off and check for cuts, holes, etc. Also check all the vaccum lines for cracks/punctures. I would replace the PCV valve if it has not been replaced lately.
I would also take the throttle body off and clean it and replace the gasket.

Be carefull not to confuse fuel line with vaccum lines e.g. the lower line from the fuel pressure regulator is a fuel return line, the upper line to the diaphram is a vaccum line.

Also check for a referee's whistle in the intake :D
