last night when i went to store when i turned car off the car kept trying to turn over i removed battery cable to get it to turn off this morning i reattached cable went inside to let car warm up so i could take it to a mechanic and when i got outside car was dead and the smell of burning oil was in the air

If you turned ign. switch off and engine continued to run then ign. switch would be suspect.

Pulling battery cable while engine is running can damage alternator.
