Transmission problem
1991 Geo Metro Front Wheel Drive Automatic 125000 miles

Hello, I have put a new engine in this car and broke the ears off the trans pump in the process. I replaced the trans pump gears and now have verified that the fluid is pumping.
My problem is that the trans won't shift into reverse. I have run the self diagnostic checker through the A/T control module and the lights indicated no problem. I checked the operation of the solenoids (direct clutch and 2nd brake) with a jumper wire and they are opening, and I checked the resistance of the neutral safety switch in all gears. All tests come up normal.
The car will move forward in N, D, 2, L. In reverse it acts as if it is in neutral, and in Park it will move forward a little if the shifter is not pushed all the way forward.

Does this sound like anything to anyone or have I messed up the reverse gears in the tranny somehow.
Thanks for any help
Gabe
PS I have the black service manual for this car

Could you be tad more specific? Does it sound like a solenoid? Or does it sound like my input shaft is not reaching the gears? I was hoping for a more detailed analysis.

The transmission is faulty and possible causes are:

1st and reverse brake defective.
Direct clutch defective.
Torque converter defective.
Oil circuit oil leak.
One-way clutch defective.
Forward clutch defective.
Oil pump defective.
Regulator valve defective.
Throttle valve defective.

All of these are internal and the damage of the pump gears could be the main factor.
