After hearing a pop the transmission will not engage gears?

While pulling out of a parking lot, I heard what sounded like a pop and the car dropped out of drive. Using the shift column makes no difference. No gears will engage. When putting the car into park, it is still free rolling, like the car is stuck in neutral. If there is something such as a shift mechanism which connects to the shift column and changes gears on the transmission, could this be the fault?

Hi,

It sounds like you have broken a CV joint. The CV joints are at the ends of each front axle. Take a look through this link that explains what one is and how it works:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-a-cv-joint-works

Now, if either side has failed, the vehicle will not move in gear and you will be unable to engage park. Actually, the transmission will go into park, but the axle will not hold the vehicle in place.

So, first, check under the front of the vehicle and locate the CV joints and the axles to which they are joined. What I need you to do is first, see if the rubber boots are ripped. Also, grab the axle and see if there is play indicating it's no longer connected.

Keep in mind, the vehicle park isn't working, so make sure the vehicle is secure before doing this.

I attached a pic below of a CV axle (half shaft). I circled where the joints are and the rubber boot covering them. The T stands for transmission and the W stands for the end that will go to the wheel assembly.

Check this and let me know what you find. Also, it could be related to the linkage, but I don't think you would have heard a bang. Also, once it was in gear, a broken linkage would unlikely shift it to neutral. It's possible but unlikely.

Let me know what you find.

Take care,

Joe

Hi,

You are very welcome.

If you plan to replace it yourself, here is a link that will show you in general how it's done. You can use this as a guide.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/replace-cv-axle

I don't know if it was the left or right side, but I attached the directions for the removal and replacement for both sides specific to your vehicle. See attachments below.

I hope this helps. Let me know how things turn out for you or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

I am an engineer, electronics, low voltage, so I prefer to leave the motor vehicle to the experts in their field. I have a very good mobile mechanic who came out today. We got the CV joint at O'Reilly auto for $132.00 and he charged me $300.00 labor, it took him a bit over an hour in the 95 degree heat of Florida. I thought that was fair. Am I correct?

Hi,

The cost of the part isn't bad. Labor seems a bit high, but I'm up north from you. The average shop price in this area is $100.00 per hour.

Regardless, please feel free to come back anytime in the future if you have questions or need help. You're always welcome here.

Take care,

Joe

JACOBANDNICKOLAS,
I have another question and hopefully you can be spot on as before. When the car starts after sitting overnight or a few hours, everything is fine. After running about 10 minutes, the car starts over revving and can't get any acceleration. The troubles code obtained is P0746 Pressure Control Solenoid A Performance/Stuck off. Ideas? Thoughts? Suggestions?
