First, check and make sure the clutch fluid is full. Most of these vehicles have a hydraulic clutch which consist of a clutch master cylinder and a slave cylinder. If the fluid is low, basically you are not disengaging the transmission from the engine. It would be similar to shifting without a clutch.
If the fluid is full, I suspect it will be one of the aforementioned components. Take a look through this link. It discusses the parts I mentioned. Please note that the link shows fluid being added to the master cylinder. On many cars, there is a separate reservoir for the clutch fluid.
