I can only get reverse to work if it is put in between the reverse and neutral. All other gears are fine.

Sounds like the shift cable is a bit worn or the detent pin plate is worn. It is not a hard fix, but it does mean the gear position switch may need to be adjusted and that requires measuring the switch continuity as you move the switch.
