Hi,
Before running an additional cooler, has anyone tried flushing the one in the vehicle now? If it is plugged, it will still be plugged if you install an additional cooler. Therefore, it won't change anything. If it was the cooler being restricted, either replace it or flush it. An additional one shouldn't be needed.

If you want to replace the cooler, here are directions for a Ford Taurus which I believe is similar to the Fairmont. The attached pics correlate with the directions.

PROCEDURES
Removal
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the splash shield.

1 Remove the five screws and air deflector, if equipped.
2 Remove the remaining seven screws and the splash shield.
3. Note: Place a drain pan under the transaxle fluid cooler.

Disengage the clamps and remove the transmission fluid cooler hoses and the power steering fluid cooler hoses.

4. Remove the bolts and the combination fluid cooler.
Installation
1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Fill the transaxle to the specified level.
- Fill and purge the power steering system of air.

One other thing I found. There is a technical service bulletin for the Taurus. If you look at the last pic, it indicates that most transmission issues are related to a contaminated cooling system for the trans. I'm adding it because It may be a good idea to try and flush the system (specifically, the trans cooler and lines).
