My van shut off in my driveway when we were parking and got stuck in reverse. We figured out the little thing on top of the steering wheel to unlock the gear shift but now it is stuck in first even though we can move the gear shifter. How can I resolve this issue and get the car in park or neutral to start it?

This sounds like the shifter cable has gone bad causing gear selector to jam up but to be sure try to remove the cable end from the transmission to see if you can get the shifter to move. Here are diagrams below that will show you what to do.

Please run down these guides and report back.
