Gear selector

Hi there, I'm having trouble getting my gears into 1st and 2nd gear. Most of the time I have to pull away in 3rd gear. My mechanic told me that my gear selector is worn out. Please help and can you give me a schematic view of what this selector looks like?

the piece I think he is referring to is internal in the transmission. the trans has to be removed and dis assembled to gain access to the shaft.
