gear not engaged

1999 FORD GALAXIE

The car starts smoothly, but when engaged in a gear it will turn off completely. When put in park it starts immediately. I am not seeing warning lights for the battery on my dash board display.

Have it scanned for codes it may be a module that controls that area.
