The manual gear lever is able to select gears as normal. Car then drives as normal.

However the gear lever is very wobbly in all positions,

I remember forcing it into reverse recently due to stiffness, have I broken something?

Yes, at the end of the gear shift is a round ball, on this round ball there is a plastic cover, it sounds like this cover has broken off which causes to play to be excessive. Please remove the gear shifter to inspect.
