I have an ongoing issue with my car listed above (Turbo). I will be driving normally then the car starts to go back and forth, hesitating to go into second gear while speeding up then all of a sudden, the RPM’s shoot to around 5,000, the check engine light comes on and the car gets stuck in second gear. It will not go below second gear unless i am off the gas for 10 seconds or so. When it does finally shift, the car shifts so hard that I practically get whiplash. When I try to speed up, the RPM’s go up then back down and the car begins to stutter all over again. When coming to a full stop, the auto-stop no longer works, and it takes between 10-15 seconds to get to 10RPMs. If I turn the car off then back on, the issue happens again approximately 2 minutes later. If I keep it off for 5 minutes, I am actually able to drive normally. Note, this doesn't happen every day. It has also never happened driving to work, only on the way home.
I’ve taken it to the dealer four times and on two occasions, the issue is miraculously gone, and it doesn't happen again for about 1,000 miles. It happens randomly on the highway, back roads and once in the city. It's happened on hills, driving straight and on the highway. completely random.
The dealer replaced the TCM and a few other parts (see attached pictures) and that cleared the issue for about a month. Then I fully broke down and was barely able to make it over a hill; I had to have it towed because it was not recognizing what gear i was in. When I tried to put it in reverse, the whole car moved back and forth three times before going into reverse, but again, it wasn’t showing I was in reverse on the dash. When this happens, the indication that I'm in drive (D) flashes on the dash and sometimes even turns off and doesn't even display what gear I'm in.
After finally shifting in and out of the gears, I finally got it to recognize it was in park for a second then turned the car off for 45 minutes. Turned it back on when the tow truck arrived; the check engine light was on, but it shifted and recognized it was in drive and reverse.
One thing I noticed, the engine gets louder as it's happening and if you pull over, there is a clicking sound (see video).
Dealer drove it 30 miles on two separate occasions and the issue was not present but check engine was on, so they cleared the codes and sent me on my way.
The last time it happened was on July 1st- it's been 6 months since the last time it happened so I'm thinking that it could be related to the cold weather. I live in Maryland, so it's been cold as of late. It's happened two times in the last three times I've driven it. So, it's been about 15,000 miles since it last happened in July. That's a rough estimate though.
I have changed the battery; spark plugs and have cleaned the throttle bore.
Attached are the codes being thrown, service invoices and video of the clicking sound.
