I had a mechanic change the automatic gearbox oil in my car. When I got it back I noticed that it is now taking longer to go through the gears and is louder on the engine.

Hi,

Assuming these are related, we need to make sure the fluid used was correct and that they didn't put any additives in it. I attached the specs depending on what transmission you have. However, I would take it back and have them look at it if this happened immediately after.

They may not have done anything wrong but they need to check it just to make sure.

Thank you for your reply.

The mechanic got very aggressive with me when I told him the issue so I dont feel I can take it back to him. I called my previous mechanic and he said the Valve block should have been reset after? This mechanic didnt do that.

Should that have been done?

I don't show that being part of the process when changing the fluid but it may just be a best practice. Basically, by doing that you are forcing the transmission to relearn all the shift points which it will be different with new fluid.

It may be a good idea to take it over to the other mechanic because it sounds like he knows a little more about these vehicles.

Hi,

Issue is i'm in Scotland and my old mechanic is in Ireland.

I have particularly noticed the gear this is worst in is getting it into fifth. It is wanting now to get to 70 mph before getting into fifth and over 3,000 rpm's.

Yeah. That's a bit of an issue. Even if that was the issue it should be hard to get into specific gears. It would just be delayed or longer shift points.

At this point the best suggestion I could give is to try and find another mechanic that is familiar with this or have it out with the other one because if this did start after he worked on it, he should take a look at it.
